Centrifugal supercharger.
The history of this type of supercharger has its roots in 1902. That’s when the Frenchman Louis Renault patented the first in the world centrifugal supercharger. Since then this type of supercharger has won its rightful place in the hearts of fans and in the engine compartment of their cars. Here’s why.
Centrifugal blowers - are one of the best ones according to the price / quality ratio - they are essentially a complete antithesis of supercharger Roots. The blowers are made in the form of “snail” and have approximately the same properties as the turbine.
The efficiency of centrifugal blowers is directly proportional to engine speed. At low engine speeds the increase of power is not virtually perceived (though it is more than at the same turbine), but at medium and high power it shoots up! And all this is accompanied by a distinctive feature of any centrifugal supercharger - a pleasant whistling. In addition, this type of supercharger is compact and lightweight.
Screw supercharger.
This is perhaps the most advanced and most efficient type of superchargers, produced nowadays. The first in the world screw supercharger was produced and patented by Swedish engineer Alf Lisholm in 1936 and since then it has firmly established on the technological top of the compressor Olympus.
According to its form and structure the screw supercharger is very similar to the Roots, but in fact it differs from it radically. Yes, it built on the principle of two rotors in one package too, but its forms are pointier, and they resemble the screws. As the rotor rotates, the air that is sucked into the blower is run through the spiral conveyor and at the exit from the body it is already in a compressed state. That’s another significant difference in screw supercharger from the Roots: the air is compressed already inside the unit, and this means that there is nowhere to take those forces counter that push the air back into the case.
But there are pitfalls. The biggest and the most unpleasant of them - is the price. First, the technology of production of so unique rotors is labor-intensive. And secondly, when using screw blowers, they produce quite a lot of noise, so the additional costs are spent on ensuring their maximum silence.
Сonclusion.
Which supercharger to choose if you still thinking about buying? It all depends on your desires and capabilities. If it is important for you to maintain power at high rpm, then a compact centrifugal blower - is your choice. But if you want both these properties in one supercharger and you are able to afford it, take a screw one.
But, in addition to new “booster packs”, you should be ready for other expenses - improvement of exhaust, cooling system and replacement of “native” pistons and connecting rods by forged: factory parts cannot withstand the pressure that will constantly give them such devices.
Long time ago car changed into not only a vehicle but also a luxury and entertainment object. Many car owners are eager to have high-powered sport car but not everybody can afford it.
