Car Tyres : Regularly Check Them Over

The safety of yourself and your family is probably the one thing that you consider to be most important in your daily life. While many people like to consider purchasing certain vehicles that have high safety ratings for drivers and passengers, not many drivers spend enough attention on the general day-to-day safety checks that are important when driving a vehicle. One of the most important and certainly the easiest safety checks that any driver should make before driving a vehicle is tyre safety.

Most people tend not to think of safety checks before they begin driving their cars. This is an understandable, but highly dangerous concept. If a tyre is damaged in any way it could have serious consequences for the driver and passengers in the vehicle. Considering a quick visual check will take around two minutes of your time, do you want to risk the safety of your family by not checking?

All tyres are designed with different intentions. Some tyres are designed for wet weather, some for snow, some for off-road conditions and some are designed for only dry, warm weather. For this reason, it is important to make sure the tyres that are fitted to your vehicle suit the conditions in which your journey will take place. For example, if you drive an SUV, it could have off-road tyres fitted; this would obviously be unsuitable if you spend most of your time driving on motorways as the tyres were not designed for that purpose.

Over the course of a tyres lifetime, it will most certainly be subjected to knocks and scrapes against curbs and other obstacles. For this reason alone it is important to check your tyres regularly. When a tyre comes into heavy contact with an obstacle, it can be deformed or punctured. Deformation of a tyre is quite obviously noticeable as you will tend to see a large bulge on the outer rim of the tyre (called the tyre wall). Punctures may not be immediately noticeable as a small puncture could mean that the tyre deflates over a long period of time.

Worn tyres can be an extremely dangerous safety hazard in certain conditions such as rain or snow. All weather road tyres are designed to divert water through grooves in the tyres to the outside of the tyre surface; this enables the tyre surface better contact with the road. When tyres are worn, their ability to dissipate water is diminished, therefore reducing the effectiveness and ultimately grip levels of the tyre.

Worn, damaged or unsuitable tyres will also cause indirect deficiencies in fuel consumption, braking distances and cornering potential. The bottom line is, always check your tyres before any journey, no matter how short, it could be a matter of life and death.
