Car maintenance is something that many of us fail to properly consider and only notice faults in our vehicles when they cause us to breakdown or warning lights appear on the dashboard. In actual fact, every one of us should be checking our vehicles fully before even setting out of a journey as one small fault could lead to a much bigger problem, such as an accident. Arguably the most important, and also one of the easiest parts of your car you should inspect before starting a journey are the tires.
If a vehicle’s tyres are damaged or worn, this can have a negative effect on your car’s handling characteristics and could potentially lead to an accident. Whatever the weather conditions or the length of journey, it is important to fully inspect your tyres before you leave, your life could quite literally depend on it. Below are some pointers to inspecting your tyres to help you in recognizing when they need replacing.
Your first check should be on the suitability of your current tyres for the vehicle they are fitted to and the conditions in which you will be driving. What this means is that you need to know that your tyres are the correct dimensions in terms of width, tyre wall depth and speed rating, according to the wheels they are fitted to. You also need to be aware of the conditions you are expecting to be driving in and that the tyres that are fitted are suited to those conditions, in other words, off-road tyres should not be used on the road and if you are expecting anything other than completely dry weather, you should have all-weather tyres fitted.
You also need to check the wear rate of every tyre that is fitted to your vehicle. Tyres that are worn past their minimum tread depth are a main cause of accidents and considering how easy it is to check, it is surprising many people feel that they do not need to worry about the tread level until it is too late. Minimum legal tread levels vary in different countries, though the majority of countries use a limit of 1.6mm across the central three quarters of each tyre. You can check this level easily by using a tread depth level indicator which can be bought very cheaply from your local auto parts dealer. You should also check the outer wall and the tread for damage such as nicks or grazes. Tyre bulges are also common and indicate damage to the interior structural rigidity of a tyre.
